25 March, Kathmandu:

A market monitoring team from the Ministry of Population and Environment Thursday seized 322 kilogrammes polythene bags from in and around the Kalimati vegetable market area.

The team was headed by Ministry Joint Secretary and Chief of Environment Management Division Chief Narayanraj Timilsina, Department Communications Officer Shankar Prasad Poudel said.

Polythene bag weighing less than 35 microns is banned in the capital.

Though the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Office announced the ban on the use of polythene bags in the capital from last Nepali new year ( Baisakh 1), the announcement is yet to be effectively implemented. The Law has banned the sale, use and storage of the plastic bags not meeting the standard and anyone found violating the law is liable to a fine up to Rs 50,000.
