-Helsinki – A Lufthansa flight from Helsinki to Frankfurt was forced to make an emergency landing due to a damaged motor on Saturday.

The flight returned to Helsinki after one of its engines failed, witnesses told YLE radio. They said flames were visible and an explosion was heard after take off from Helsinki Vantaa airport.

The international airport in the Finnish capital issued a red alert, but the plane was able to land about half an hour later without problems.

The cause of the damage was being investigated, Lufthansa spokesperson Christian Gottschalk said.

Passengers had been booked on other flights.
