28 Dec, Kathmandu: At least one thousand house owners have presented applications at the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) office citing their failure to meet the set criteria when building their houses.

Around a thousand house owners have submitted applications as part of the KMC’s drive to bring those not meeting the building code within the tax radar, KMC Revenue Division Chief, Mahesh Kafle shared. A month ago, KMC issued notice in all 35 wards seeking applications from those not meeting the criteria.

The Metropolitan City launched the drive for providing official stamps to the houses without officially approved maps and built in violation of the building code, to keep a record of the houses with approved maps that do not tally with the constructed infrastructure and to keep the data on houses constructed as per the approved maps.

The house owners are required to present their applications by mid January. Apart from minor cases of violation of the building code, KMC plans to demolish the houses built in public land property and posing danger to the neighbours.

KMC believes that 80 per cent of the total houses built in all 35 wards do not meet the building code.
