Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba has called for the government to expand library across the country as it is a main learning palce for poor students.

Inaugurating the annual general assembly of the Kathmandu Valley Public Library, leader Deuba, also the former Prime Minister, drew the government’s attention towards the expansion of library as an important public institution for enhancing knowledge and education.

Also speaking on the occasion, Joint Secretary at Ministry of Education Dr Labadev Awasthi shared that the government has initiated works as per the concept of ‘One School – One Library’ and preparation is underway to outline a master plan for library development.

Other speakers at the programme stressed the need to expand the library so as to bring poor and helpless children under the access of library.

The speakers added that the April 25 Earthquake has devastated main libraries of the country including Nepal National Library that has disrupted their services and asked the government to take ahead the campaign of ‘One Town – One Library’.

Chief of Nepal National Library Yadav Chandra Niraula said the library is not providing service to users due to devastation caused by the earthquake.

National Library’s Chairperson Dr Narayan Khadka said that the library was established at Bhrikutimandap in 2060 BS with the conviction that it is required for the transformation of the country.
