World Enviornment Day

5 June, Kathmandu: Different programs are being organized across the country today to mark the World Environment Day.

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment in association with different donor agencies is organizing different programs. The programs include interaction, seminar, speech, rallies and others.

Likewise, Prime Minister Sushil Koirala is attending a special program to be organized at Academy Hall today before leaving for China.

Slogan for this year’s World Environment Day is ‘Raise your Voice, not the Sea Level.’ But, Nepal is marking the day under the theme of “Save Himalayas, Preserve Environment”.

World Environment Day is an annual event that is aimed at being the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. World Environment Day activities take place all year round and climax on 5 June every year, involving everyone from everywhere.

The World Environment Day celebration began in 1972 and has grown to become one of the main vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and encourages political attention and action.

Through World Environment Day, the United Nations Environment Program is able to personalize environmental issues and enable everyone to realize not only their responsibility, but also their power to become agents for change in support of sustainable and equitable development.

The celebration of the World Environment Day for the country like Nepal could be a milestone  to create awareness among the general public as in the recent year we are the receiving end due to effects of the climate change resulting in delayed monsoon, snow melting in the Himalayas, glacial outburst and many others.

Likewise, Nepal bio-diversity is at risk due to climate change.

Chure region

Marking of the World Environment Day would be effective in Nepal only if we launch effective programs to stop Chure denudation, pollution in the Himalayas and for the promotion of the clear energy.

In the recent times, the over exhaustion of Chure region and rapid deforestation has pose serious threats to the millions of people in the Tarai region.
