22 April, Kathmandu: Minister for Information and Communications, Dr. Minendra Rijal, has said it was necessary to introduce a new policy on information broadcasting and Information Technology (IT).

During the Second Quarterly Progress review meeting of the Ministry of Information and Communications and of the Ministerial-level Development Problem Resolution Committee, Dr Rijal stressed on the need of amending the policy in view of the rapid development of IT.

He said problems have arisen when government activities were not directed by extensive policy and urged the bodies concerned to move forward paying special attention to this effect. He added that with the development of the IT, the government would bring reforms in the Ministry.

Minister Dr. Rijal said the government would resolve the problem of frequency and cable networks with a lasting solution. The government is thinking of reforming the postal services to make it accessible and relevant to all, he added.

At the meeting Communications Secretary Suman Prasad Sharma urged the Chiefs of the bodies under the Ministry to make self-analysis in course of the work evaluation. He urged to find the solution coordinating with the Ministry after identifying the actual problems and challenges while carrying out their responsibilities.

Gopi Krishna Mainali, joint secretary at the National Planning Commission urged to provide accurate information through the government offices run under the respective ministries.

Information and technology friendly environment should be created to disseminate activities that are carried out in the respective offices, Mainali added.

On the occasion, it was shared that preparation has been made for developing a film city in Dolkha district, assistance has been provided to build the FNJ district chapter building, and War-Victim Journalists’ Welfare Fund Directive has been approved and sent for implementation while the South Asia Sub-regional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) launched information highway project has achieved success.

At the meeting, heads of National Information Commission, National Press Council, Department of Printing, Nepal Telecom, National News Agency, Radio Nepal, Nepal Television, Gorkhapatra Corporation and Film Development Board had presented their respective progress report. RSS
