26 August, KATHMANDU: Jamie McGoldrick, the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Nepal , welcomed the country’s peace process by completion of integration of the former Maoist combatants into the Nepal Army on Monday.

By issuing a statement, Resident Coordinator McGoldrick said the completion of integration marked a milestone in the Nepali peace process that began with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in presence of the UN in November 2006.

McGoldrick also attended the Commissioning Parade of Officer Cadet Induction Basic Course at the Nepali Military Academy of the Nepal Army at Kharipati, Bhaktapur today to witness as many as 70 former rebel commanders conferred the insignia of Nepal Army officials.

The UN envoy further urged all the stakeholders to strengthen the conducive environment for the election and to increase the momentum to implement the outstanding commitments of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, including constitution drafting and setting up of transitional justice mechanisms. “I reaffirm the continued commitment of the United Nations to cooperate closely with Nepal in support of progress in the peace process,” he said.
