16 Oct, Nawalparasi: Around 385 thousand metric tonnes meat is consumed in the country annually. Of this, around 55 thousand metric tonnes of meat products are imported from India and China.

According to the Department of Livestock Services, 54 per cent meat of he-buffalo, 17 per cent chicken, seven per cent meat of boar, one per cent of sheep and 0.7 per cent of duck is consumed.

Programme Director of Directorate of Livestock Market Promotion, Bal Bahadur Thapa, said that meat products worth Rs 3 billion are traded across country during Dashain and Tihar festivals. Of them, meat products worth Rs 1.5 million is consumed in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur districts during the period.

Out of total amount of meat products consumed across the country, one-third amount of meat products is consumed in Kathmandu valley. RSS
