Kathmandu, Nov.4:  The Election Commission has said the task of distributing temporary biometric voters’ identity cards will begin within the next few days.

The printing of ID cards had begun on October 27. The temporary card includes details about voters in the front part whereas the back part reads the EC’s call for voters for voting.

EC could not begin the printing of ID card on time due to its own problems.

According to Spokesperson for the Commission, Bir Bahadur Rai, printing of cards has reached the final phase.  Packing of printed cards is taking place for the delivery to the respective districts, he said.

Voters will get their ID cards until November 18, a day before the CA election. Arrangements are likely to be made for distributing cards from the hands of volunteers mobilised for voting education, election officers and from district election offices as there is no enough time for the distribution, the EC Spokesperson said, adding voters can also receive cards from the polling centers on the election day also.

A total of 12,147,865 voters (6,166,829 women, 5,980,881 men and 155 third genders) are voting from 240 election constituencies in the November 19 election from where 6,128 political candidates (first-past-the post) system and 11,103 (Proportional Representation) candidates are contending, the EC said.

Districts have started receiving the election materials when only 15 days are to go for the second CA election.

According to the EC, over 55 sorts of election materials including ballot papers and ink are necessary for holding the election.

The EC has printed 14,952,000 PR ballot papers (light red) and the equal number of FPTP ballot papers (light blue) for the upcoming CA election.

There will be 240 types of ballot papers for the FPTP election and a same type of ballot papers for the PR.

This time, around 22 percent more ballot papers than the number of voters have been printed due to various reasons.

A total of 122 political parties are taking part in the PR election. The EC has already managed ink necessary for the election, it is learnt. RSS
