22 August, Lalitpur: Two new species of mammals have been found in the country for the first time.

The newly found animals are scientifically known as ‘steppe polecat Mustela evermanii’ locally known as kwak and ‘Tibetan wolf Canis lupus chanco’ locally known as Chengu, said Madhu Kshetri, officer at the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC).

The NTNC informed it by organizing a press meet at its central office, Lalitpur today, information officer at the office Num Raj Khanal said.

These animals were captured in camera at the Upper Annapurna Conservation Area on June 23 and 26 this year and made public today, Khanal added.

Member Secretary at the NTNC Govinda Gajurel said that the Trust is active in research works.

With the discovery of these two new species of mammals, the number of mammals have reached 211 in the country.
