21 August, Kathmandu: The Election Commission (EC) has rejected the high-level political committee’s (HLPC) plea to extend the window period for voter registration by one week. Chief Election Commissioner Neel Kantha Uprety turned down the proposal of HLPC’s urge to extend the deadline saying that further extension would directly affect the November 19 polls.

Following the HLPC meeting, a team of four-party leaders namely Nepali Congress president Sushil Koirala, UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal, UCPN (Maoist) leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha, Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (Loktantrik) general secretary Jitendra Dev, Rastriya Madhes Samajbadi Party chairman Sharat Singh Bhandari and MJF-Nepal vice chairman Bharat Bimalmet Uprety.

The EC is currently carrying out the registration process, extending the window period for a week from August 17.
