24 June, Lalitpur: The government has officially announced Lalitpur district fully literate-zone claiming that the district has attained total literacy. However, experts and locals doubt the government announcement, and term it merely a hollow step.

Minister for Education Chitralekha Yadav made an announcement at a formal program organized by the officials on Monday.

Earlier on June 16, Sindhupalchowk was declared the first district attaining the total literary. But, President Dr Ram Baran Yadav is making a formal announcement on June 26.

Lalitpur District Education Officer Shiva Kumar Sapkota said that a district is considered to have attained total literacy if 95 per cent of its population was able to read and write.

According to him, 99.2 per cent population in the district is literate. The government’s National Literacy Campaign includes people in between five to sixty years of age.
