Speaking at an interaction program at Reporters’ Club on Saturday, Minister Acharya said the government was implementing an integrated environment conservation program on a campaign basis for the protection of the Chure region which is geologically fragile and is also at high risk of earthquake.

The Minister for Forest underlined the need of collective commitment for the conservation of the Chure belt as it is under threat due to the over-exploitation and also because it was a very sensitive area and a matter of common concern and responsibility.

“We are in the process of formulating the policy and program of the Chure Development Committee; the people will lend much support for the conservation of the Chure region if we could highlight the significance of the Chure to a large section of the population. We have already prohibited the export of aggregates from the region to other countries, but for domestic needs we would manage by formulating appropriate policy,” he said.

Minister Acharya said the government constituted the President Chure Tarai Madhes Conservation Committee under the chairmanship of former Secretary Rameshwar Khanal for contributing to the environment conservation of the Chure region through the judicious utilization of the multitude of flora and fauna and the medicinal herbs found in the region as well as for the protection of the area which also exists as a biological pathway.
