Kathmandu, Jan. 10: Chairman of the Council of Ministers and Minister for Defense Khil Raj Regmi has said Nepal desired for world peace and disarmament.
During his meeting with UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Angela Kane, at his office today, Chairman Regmi said, “Nepal wants to see peace and development and the world free from any sorts of arms of mass destruction.”
On the occasion, Chairman Regmi stressed on mass destruction of weapons including atomic, nuclear, chemical and biological as well as diverting the millions of rupees being invested in military expenses to poverty alleviation and development, according to Ministry Spokesperson and UN Desk Chief Deepak Dhital.
Nepal, a signatory of the Arms Trade Treaty put its views about world peace, education and for the effective functioning of the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament (UNRCPD) in Asia and the Pacific based in Kathmandu.
Talking to RSS briefly after the meeting, UN Under Secretary Kane praised the role of Nepal in the disarmament activities. She said she got commitments from Chairman Regmi to expand UNRCPD in the Asia Pacific region. She expressed her hope that the budget allocated by the developed and rich countries for military expenses will be gradually shifted to attain world peace, development and poverty reduction.
The international donor agencies have also given assurances to support disarmament, she said. UN Under Secretary Kane had arrived here on January 4 on a weeklong visit to Nepal. Earlier, she had a meeting with Minister for Home and Foreign Affairs Madhav Prasad Ghimire. RSS
