17 September, Kathmandu : Secretary-General of BIMSTEC Sumith Nakandala on Tuesday paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sushil Koirala.

During the meeting held at the Prime Minister’s official residence at Baluwatar, the two held discussions on issues concerning mutual cooperation and coordination among the BIMSTEC member-nations and institutional development of BIMSTEC, Secretary-General Nakandala told RSS.

Nakandala has been appointed the secretary-general of BIMSTEC from its Third Summit held in Myanmar six months ago. The Summit also decided to set up BIMSTEC Secretariat in Bangladesh.

At the meeting, Secretary-General Nakandala informed Prime Minister Koirala, also the Chairman of BIMSTEC; of the setup of BIMSTEC Secretariat at a well-equipped building of the Bangladesh government.

Similarly, Prime Minister and Chairman of BIMSTEC Koirala said the member countries of BIMSTEC are nature-gifted and expressed his confidence that the drastic changes could be brought about in the lives of the people of this region through existing natural resources, said Dr Dinesh Bhattarai, Foreign Advisor to PM Koirala.

Prime Minister Koirala is learnt to have said that there is a vast array of potentials of tourism development in BIMISTEC countries and this can be materialized when the region is connected with air and road networks.

Likewise, Nakandala expressed the hope that the SAARC Summit to take place in Kathmandu, Nepal would further strengthen mutual relations among the countries of the region. RSS
