21 July, Kathmandu: Speaker Onsari Gharti has said that role of women parliamentarians should be important in formulating laws that would protect and promote their rights.

Inaugurating the first assembly of Women Parliamentarians Coordination Committee here Thursday, Speaker Onsari underscored unity among the women parliamentarians for their more rights as she argued that although women’s representation in the local units had seen an increase, they were limited to Deputy Chair due to reservations.

Also speaking in the programme, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Krishna Bahadur Mahara commended the formation of the Women Parliamentarian Coordination Committee as well as the its maiden assembly.

He also pledged on CPM-Maoist Centre’s fullest support for the protection and promotion of woman rights.
Similarly, Nepali Congress Chief Whip Chinkaji Shrestha spoke of the need for the women to crusade in unison for more rights.

Committee Chair Arzoo Deuba shared that the assembly would endorse the regulations formulated by the first assembly with amendments.

The women parliamentarians associated with the Committee have been pressing for the effective implementation of at least 33 per cent representation of women in the current cabinet. RSS
