19 July, Kathmandu:

Speaker Onsari Gharti has said that women have been deprived of benefits that they are entitled to as they are not aware about their rights.

Speaker Gharti said so at a programme on ‘Leveraging Right to Information for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women’, organised by the National Information Commission and UN Women here on Tuesday. “Most of the women are ignorant about the facilities guaranteed by the government. Women themselves should find out what they are entitled to, she said.”

The Speaker urged all women to seek information and added that although the new constitution has made some provision regarding issues of women, support of all was essential for its implementation.

Speaker Gharti said, “Consciousness is the ultimate power. The provisions mentioned in the new constitution would be limited to paper only if the provisions are not implemented.”

Objecting over keeping the information secret in more than 250 laws out of 400 in Nepal, Chief Commissioner at NIC, Krishnahari Baskota, said that they have been drawing attention to correct this.

Information Commissioners– Kiran Pokharel and Yasoda Timilsina said that it was necessary to make women aware about right to information as they are the back force behind house, family, society and nation.

A booklet ‘Information related to Women’s facilities’ published by the Commission with support of UN Women was released on the occasion. RSS
