1 June, Kathmandu: The government has announced to upgrade industrials cities -Biratnagar and Birgunj-into the metropolitan cities.

Both the cities were earlier the sub-metropolitan cities.
According to the Ministry of Local Development, the newly elevated metropolitan cities will have the same number of ward numbers and border as in the status of the sub-metropolitan cities.

The Ministry has expressed its confidence that these two new metropolitan cities would be established as the model ones advancing further in the economic areas.

In view of the possibilities of future expansion based on area, population, infrastructures, public demand, and constitutional provision needed for the new metropolitan cities, the cabinet meeting held on Wednesday took the decision to this effect, according to the press statement released by the Ministry’s Spokesperson Rudrasingh Tamang.

The press release further said the decision was taken based on the univocal recommendation of the discussion with political parties, on availability of physical infrastructures, and demand of the local people. RSS
