22 May, Kathmandu: The four major political parties have agreed to draft the new constitution, fight the challenge posed by the devastating earthquake and effectively complete the historical job of nation’s reconstruction.

During a meeting held late this evening at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, the top leaders of the Nepali Congress, CPN (UML), UCPN (Maoist), Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (Democratic) agreed to form a national unity government, face the crisis and write the new constitution together, Nepali Congress assistant general secretary Purna Bahadur Khadka said after the meeting.

Khadka said that discussions were held regarding the joint commitment of all political parties to stand the nation on a single agenda and constitute a national plan of action to fight the aftermath of the disaster. He added that all leaders have agreed to arrange temporary settlement to the quake-hit people, provide medicines and foodstuffs before the onset of rainy season.

Emerging from the meeting, CPN (UML) Vice Chairperson Bidhya Devi Bhandari said the participants discussed ways to enforce the common resolution motion passed by the parliament after the April 25 earthquake and measures to be adopted in view of the risk of landslides during the upcoming monsoon season.

Likewise, CPN (UML) leader Bhim Rawal said the meeting centered on seeking ways to face the emerging post-quake scenario, providing relief materials to the people and moving ahead with national unity.

On the occasion, Madhesi People’s Rights Forum (Democratic) Chairman Bijaya Kumar Gachchhadar said the country suffered huge loss in the earthquake and stressed the need for national unity for rebuilding efforts and building a New Nepal.

Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala, NC Vice President Ram Chandra Poudel, CPN (UML) Chair KP Sharma Oli, UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Madhesi People’s Rights Forum (Democratic) Chairman Gachchhadar among others attended the meeting.
