2 November, UNITED NATIONS  : The UN Security Council on Friday voiced its deep concern over continued violence in Syria and condemned all violence against civilians.In a press statement issued here, the council members expressed outrage at indiscriminate attacks against civilians, including those involving shelling and aerial bombardment.

Two barrel bombs were reportedly dropped on a refugee camp in the northern province of Idlib on Wednesday, killing dozens, including children.”The Members of the Security Council recalled that all obligations under the international humanitarian law must be respected in all circumstances,” it said.

“They recalled, in particular, the obligation to distinguish between civilian populations and combatants, and the prohibition against indiscriminate attacks, and attacks against civilians and civilian objects.”

The only sustainable solution to the current crisis in Syria is through an inclusive and Syrian-led political process with a view to implementing fully the Geneva Communique, said the statement, referring to the UN-backed six-point plan aimed at ending the violence and moving the warring Syrian parties toward a political settlement.An estimated 3 million refugees have fled the country since the conflict erupted in 2011, according to the UN. Xinhua
